About Melville

MELVILLE
The name never fails to strike a chord of fear, shame (what kind of student ignores Moby Dick?), or even canonical reverence, in the eyes of voracious readers. So why choose as my moniker the master of American lit? How could a young, unmarried, English teacher possibly think she is qualified enough to rival Melville? Simple. I don’t think of it that way.

I selected Melville because:
· I like water
· …and whales.

Or, if I gave a less flippant answer, choosing Melville reflects my passion for American literature (mostly environmental writers) and my admiration for the vast array of knowledge / modern stylistic experimentation he displayed in Moby Dick.

I come from a family whose members have been blessed with boundless energy and the desire to get things done, whether they be personal or academic goals. Over the years, I have dabbled in music, yoga, hiking, swimming, knitting, art history, theology, children’s lit, creative writing, and, of course, reading. (Okay, let's be honest -- LOTS of reading.) While my final career/life path is still in an exploratory phase, my focus in this blog will be the journey itself. I can’t really guarantee what you will see on any given Melville Monday, but I can assure you, dear reader, it will certainly be alliterative and occasionally involve some sea creatures!
